A Kiddush While the Doctors Despaired

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, pp. 486-488, no. 7

Continued from the biography of R. Eliyahu Akiva Lipskar:

Immediately after his arrival in Toronto from Germany, his small daughter who had been born in the German D.P . Camp became sick. Her condition steadily worsened, until the doctors lost hope that she could recover. In his pain, R. Eliyahu wrote to the Rebbe regarding her illness and requested a bracha for her complete and speedy recovery. The Rebbe responded that on the upcoming Shabbos he should prepare a communal kiddush at shul. R. Eliyahu did as he was instructed and sponsored a kiddush for the community. His daughter was in a desperate situation and he was celebrating a joyous event. The community rov questioned him in astonishment, “What’s with you, Eliyahu, have you lost your mind?! Your daughter is in such a critical condition, and you’re making a kiddush?”

Shortly thereafter, the state of her health began to improve, until she recovered completely.

"I Cannot Do Other Than What My Rebbe Says"

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, p. 30, no. 3

When my zeide described how Reb Aizel would become excited about the Alter Rebbe, it was awesome: “He was the loftiest of men — higher even than Adam HaRishon before the sin. ”

Reb Aizel would say, “If Moshe Rabbeinu came by with the Rebbe, and the Rebbe said, Do this, and Moshe Rabbeinu said, Do that; I would say, ‘ You can do whatever you wish; but there is no way I’ll do anything other than what my Rebbe says. ’”

(Regarding this story the Rebbe wrote to me: As in the story of Rabbeinu Tam and Moshe Rabbeinu, in Seder HaDoros, Section 1, 49304.)

Become Proficient in Tanya

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, p. 280, no. 126

Then, too, on motzaei Yom Kippur, 5688, when Menashe (may G-d avenge his blood) — my dear friend, the tomim Menashe, the son of Binyamin Althoiz - cleared the dishes from the table, the Rebbe told him, “ …But you should become proficient in Tanya.”

Menashe fulfilled the Rebbe’s words and achieved an expertise in Tanya.
