"It Is the Same Father"
As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, p. 251, no. 88
When we received the bitter, dreadful news ( of the Rebbe’s passing on Yud Shevat, 5710 (1950) ) I fell to the ground, stunned; only my lips moved: “We are lost, we are lost…. ”
I remember now what I had heard from the senior chassidim: that those chassidim who said “he” in every generation — were mistaken. And I myself, sometime after [the passing of] our Rebbe (the Rebbe Rashab ), would say, “If my father is not here, can I take another father?” But only afterwards I understood: it is the same father, but with greater strength.
And when I came for Rosh Hashanah, 5683 (1922), the Rebbe said in the first yechidus, “We provide parnassah for our children. ”
Occasion: yud_shevat (5/5): The story opens with the news of the Frierdiker Rebbe's histalkus on Yud Shevat 5710 and the narrator's collapse on hearing it — natural material for a Yud Shevat farbrengen.
