On Yud-Beis Tammuz, after being informed unofficially that he was free, the Rebbe related that on Yud-Beis Tammuz in 5654 (1894 ) (Yud-Beis Tammuz is the Rebbe’s birthday, and in 5654 he became fourteen years old) they were on vacation and his father, the Rebbe Rashab, poured out LeChaims.

“Where did you see such a practice?” 2 the Rashbatz asked him. “By your father? Or your grandfather?”

“Trust me, ” the Rashab replied.

“And I am grateful to him, ” concluded the Rebbe.

(When I was discussing the subject of birthdays in yechidus with the Rebbe Shlita, and I related the above story, the Rebbe asked me, “Whom did the Rebbe have in mind when he said, ‘I am grateful to him’?”

I answered that I always tell the story with the understanding that the 2 I.e., celebrating a birthday.

Rebbe meant his father. “No, ” the Rebbe replied, “he meant the Rashbatz, who caused the Rebbe to say, ‘Trust me’ - this was the miracle of Yud- Beis Tammuz.”)

R. Zalman Duchman first met the Rebbe in Tishrei 5683 (1922) in Rostov, and saw him often in Leningrad when he visited the Frierdiker Rebbe. When the N.K.V.D. came to arrest the Frierdiker Rebbe on 15 Sivan 5687 (1927), the Rebbe and R. Elyeh Chaim Althoiz moved incriminating documents to safety, and the Rebbe left a trunk of manuscripts with R. Zalman, which he returned on 12 Tammuz. R. Zalman also traveled to Nevel to arrange for the father of the investigator Nachmanson to obtain information, which reached R. Michoel Dvorkin and enabled him to travel ahead to Kostroma. On Gimmel Tammuz R. Zalman was admitted to the Frierdiker Rebbe, who asked whether they had been learning Chassidus and said he had written the Shavuos maamarim in prison until the pencil was taken from him; when R. Zalman later tried at a Yud-Beis Tammuz farbrengen in 770 to reveal the Rebbe's role in the release, the Rebbe silenced him with "Sha!"

Insisting on Tuesday, Yud-Beis Tammuz

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, p. 266, no. 106

When the Rebbe reported to the G.P.U. on a Tuesday, he was told to appear again eight days later, on Wednesday — the law requiring a weekly appearance. He insisted on coming on Tuesday instead, and they laughed at anyone wanting to come to them a day early. When he came that Tuesday, Yud-Beis Tammuz — although it was a local festival — he was told that a telegram signed by Dzerzhinsky had arrived and that he was free; mistakes happen, even major ones, they said, asking his forgiveness, and the directive had come from Moscow.

"In the Same Barrel with Russian Jews"

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, pp. 275-276, no. 120

The tomim DovBer Yudevitch wrote from Riga that on Yud-Beis Tammuz 5688 (1928), while the Rebbe was convalescing near Riga, the chassidim at the farbrengen began singing Padeh BeShalom. The Rebbe stopped them, saying, "As long as Russian Jews are suffering, I'm together with them 'in the same barrel.'"
