Reciting Chassidus on Tisha B'Av

ַוויטש פון אדמו"ר צ"צ, ער אָל געקומען פון ליוב אַז ער איז איינמ אא"ז רמ"י נ"ע פלעגט דערציילן, ַרומגעפרעגט דעם סדר אָמליער אָט ביי אים הרה"צ ר' אייזיק ה אַ יונגער בחור, ה אָך געווען אאיז נ הנסיעה וכו'.

ַלץ אָלט וויסן אָט געוו אַז ער ה אַוויטש און דער רבי צ"צ איז געווען ביי אים טייער, א— ווי ליוב ּרטיות. — פב ָרמע. נו, און אָגט ער: אין ק אַז עס איז געקומען צו תשעה באב, פרעגט ער: וואו ביסטו געווען? ז א ַזוי גרויס ביסטו ביי זיך, ת"ב אָגט ר' אייזיל: אָגט ער: גע'חזר'ט חסידות. ז אָן? ז אָט מען געט אָס ה אוו ריידן חסידות?

In his youth my zeide once traveled from Lubavitch and the Tzemach Tzedek to Homil, where Reb Aizel bombarded him with detailed questions about the trip. (Reb Aizel’s interest in Lubavitch and the Tzemach Tzedek was intense; he had to know every detail.)

And when the subject of Tisha B’Av came up, Reb Aizel asked, “Where were you?”

“In Korma, ” my zeide replied.

“Nu, and what did you do?”

“We recited Chassidus. ”

“You think you’re so special, ” Reb Aizel asked, “To recite Chassidus on Tisha B’Av?!”

In the summer of 5674 (1914) the narrator's brother fell ill with tuberculosis of the bone and was taken from Homil to Kiev for surgery, then a second and a third operation, after which he was very weak. The narrator wrote a pidyon and sent it to the Rebbe's summer dacha in Zalsha; an opening formed at the site, the phlegm drained, and the doctor, Kostritzky, said he had never seen such a thing. The narrator brought his brother to Lubavitch for Rosh Hashanah 5675, but with the war having begun on Tisha B'Av and the crowds immense they could not obtain yechidus, and lacking money to stay through Sukkos they had to leave on motzaei Yom Kippur; the Rebbetzin let him wait in the small room outside the yechidus room, and when the Rebbe finally emerged very late and the narrator said "This is my brother," the Rebbe asked, "This is the one whose leg hurt?"
