Why the Fifth Night of Chanukah

בא דעם זיידן פלעגט מען, די פינפטע ליכטל חנוכה, מאכן א גרויסע פארבריינגעניש, און מ'פלעגט מאכן די התחלה אויף ש"ס. אויך פלעגט דער זיידע דערציילן בקבלה פון אלטע חסידים, היינו חסידים פון אדמו"ר הזקן זי"ע, אז דער אלטער רבי איז ארויס די דריטע ליכטל, נאר די חסידים וואס זענען געווען ארעסטירט האט מען ארויסגעלאזן די פינפטע, דערפאר האט מען קובע געווען דעם יו"ט די פינפטע.

On the fifth night of Chanukah my zeide’s custom was to have a large farbrengen and they would begin studying the Shas.27 He would also repeat what he had heard in the name of the older chassidim — namely, the Alter Rebbe’s chassidim — that the Alter Rebbe came out from prison on 27 Tractates of Talmud that each person had chosen on Yud-Tes Kislev.

the third night, but the chassidim who had been arrested with him were released only on the fifth. And that is the reason why they established the celebration on the fifth night.
