The Sukkah Certified by Matat

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, pp. 343-344, no. 43 · The Baal Shem Tov

My zeide recounted the story of the Baal Shem Tov’s sukkah in great detail.

The Baal Shem Tov’s students once gathered together in his sukkah and, looking around, noticed many questionable features. Sensing their thoughts he asked for a piece of parchment and, leaning on it, fell into deep contemplation. When he removed it from beneath the tablecloth, the parchment was inscribed with the words: “The sukkah of the Baal Shem Tov is kosher — signed Matat.”25

Reb Groinem, the mashpia in Lubavitch, related the Baal Shem Tov’s words, “I could ascend in a Heavenly whirlwind like Eliyahu the prophet, but I want to carry out the Torah in full — and there it states: For dust you are, and to dust you will return.”16

When the Alter Rebbe heard an infant crying in the Mitteler Rebbe’s room, he came inside — where the Mitteler Rebbe sat without hearing the cries — and asked, “Why don’t you learn from me? In the deepest meditation, I can still hear a fly’s wings beating against the wall. ”

"Do My Children a Favor"

As I Heard Them, Vol. 1, p. 58, no. 40 · The Alter Rebbe

They once wanted to appoint Reb Aizel to be a rebbe in Retzitza. He was about to sit down in the carriage to leave, when he reminded himself that the Alter Rebbe had once told him, “Aizik, do my children a favor” — and he turned down the offer.
